Aquellos que buscaban ser libres sólo tenían un terrible problema: tenían que fumar.

Es curioso contemplar como un hábito actualmente tan condenado sirve de eje paradigmático en el relato de Un Siglo de Cenizas (Martín Cid, editorial Akrón). El libro cuenta la historia de la familia Fiodorovich, cultivadores de un extraño tabaco llamado periquee  que sólo crece en el Mississippi.
La obra se presenta como una burla en sí misma. Les prometo que no he parado de reírme en su continua burla inteligente: desde obesos a los que matan (literalmente) de hambre hasta mujeres que poco o nada tienen que ver con el papel de la madre mediterránea en nuestra civilización. En esta incesante búsqueda de

 lo prohibido, los actores de este teatro novelado se encuentran precisamente frente a la esencia del propio relato. En sus últimas páginas se habla precisamente de la libertad de elección en un magistral diálogo entre dos hermanos: ambos eligieron y ambos quisieron. ¿Algo que ver con esta sociedad actual en la que todo parece diseñado para la esclavitud? Los tres hermanos eligen y toman una opción difícil: permanecer eternamente en un infierno creado por ellos y alimentado por el odio de las generaciones que se mantienen marchando incluso en contra de los sistemas genéticos. Nadie sabe en Absalón (la granja familiar) de quién es hijo, ¿a quién le importa realmente? Son Fiodorovich, hijos de una extraña tradición familiar que el libro lucha por continuar.
Y es que la verdadera lucha de los tres hermanos no se refiere al tabaco, símbolo satanizado hoy por excelencia, sino a la propia libertad del individuo por llegar a sí mismo, por mantenerse desatado de un mundo exterior que, paradójicamente de nuevo, lucha por esclavizar a los salvajes, a los nacidos sin grilletes.
Fuerza, tesón, también inteligencia. Es el hombre finalmente triunfador en la lucha contra el absurdo de los que ya han nacido muertos.
