Lost Paradises: Berlin

Ok, as I’m really going to the gym it seems as if I can only keep one resolution at a time…

Cashing in on the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the resulting collapse of Communist control of Eastern Europe I would like to write about Berlin. Berlin is one of the most fantastic cities in Europe, among those I have visited. As it was divided into East and West Berlin, at first it is not easy to find one's way.

My main problem was the names of the streets. I looked at the name, I tried to find someone young (mainly because they all speak English) and when I was about to ask for it, I had to take out the guide again because I had forgotten the name. And it is not that I am dumb, just try to ask for "Kurfürstendamm", just to give an example, the first time you try to speak German... After a while, though, you are used to the "Straßen".
Berlin is a very friendly city. It is very clean in spite of having a population around 3,387,828, very similar to Madrid. And you can take your pets (mainly dogs) in the underground and they can go with you nearly everywhere. Can you imagine that here? I can't. I can imagine the dogs in our underground defecating... Perhaps the pets’ behaviour reflects the manners of their owners and that is the reason why we cannot take our pets with us... We are still a long way off being that polite…
There are many monuments worth visiting and the best museum in Europe, at least the most original, the Pergamon Museum. The Pergamon houses original-sized, reconstructed monumental buildings such as the Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus, and the Ishtar Gate. There is controversy over the legitimacy of the acquisition of the collection and it was suggested that the collection should be returned to the original country of the excavations. But the same controversy exists about the Louvre or the British Museums. The problem of being a conqueror is that the future generations are going to judge you. Whether you like it or not.
The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is also amazing, known as the Holocaust Memorial, so sober and uniform…
And you cannot forget that Berlin is one of the most popular areas for nightlife and DJ-culture in Europe. Many of the buildings in Mitte area were illegally occupied by young people and transformed in counter-culture places to meet. The main nightclubs are in this area too. If you can keep awake long enough Berlin’s night offers you everything you can imagine. And you have to keep yourself up to date with the events, because places transform in one day.
I’m looking forward to going back again…. But during the summer. I went in winter and it rained, snowed, was windy, sunny, hailed… All the spectrum….

Aprovechando el 20 aniversario de la caída del muro de Berlín y del control comunista de la Europa del Este, me gustaría escribir sobre Berlín. Berlín es, de las que conozco, una de las ciudades más fantásticas de Europa. Como estaba dividida en Berlín Este y Oeste, al principio es fácil perderse. Mi principal problema era el nombre de las calles. Miraba el nombre, intentaba buscar a alguien joven (principalmente por que todos hablan inglés) y cuando ya iba a preguntar por la calle, tenía que sacar la guía de nuevo por que se me había olvidado el nombre. Y no es que sea tonta; intenta preguntar por "Kurfürstendamm", por ejemplo, la primera vez que vas a hablar alemán... Aunque después de un rato ya te has acostumbrado a las "Straßen".
Berlín es una ciudad muy acogedora y agradable. Está muy limpia, a pesar de tener una población de alrededor de 3.387.828 de personas, muy parecida a Madrid. Y puedes llevar tus mascotas (principalmente perros) en el metro, en realidad pueden ir contigo casi a cualquier sitio. ¿Puedes imaginar eso aquí? Yo no puedo. Imagino a los perros defecando en el metro... Quizás el comportamiento de las mascotas sea un reflejo del de sus amos y esa sea la razón por la que nosotros no podemos llevarlas... Estamos a años luz de ser tan educados…
Hay muchos monumentos que merece la pena visitar y el mejor museo de Europa, por lo menos el más original, el museo de Pérgamo. Este museo acoge edificios monumentales reconstruidos a tamaño original, tales como el Altar de Zeus de la ciudad de Pérgamo, la puerta del mercado romano de Mileto y las puertas de Ishtar de Babilonia. Hay mucha controversia sobre la legitimidad de la adquisición de la colección y se ha sugerido que debería devolverse al país en el que se realizaron las excavaciones. Pero la misma controversia existe sobre el Louvre o el museo Británico. El problema de ser un país conquistador es que las generaciones futuras te van a juzgar. Te guste o no.
También es impresionante el memorial a los Judíos asesinados en Europa, también conocido como el memorial del holocausto, tan sobrio y tan igual…
Y no debemos olvidar que Berlín es uno de los lugares más populares de vida nocturna y DJs de Europa. Muchos de los edificios en la zona de Mitte fueron ilegalmente ocupados por gente joven y transformados en lugares de encuentros contraculturales. También están en esta zona los principales clubes nocturnos. Si logras mantenerte despierto el suficiente tiempo, la noche de Berlín te ofrece todo lo que puedas imaginar. Y tienes que estar pendiente de lo que sucede ya que los lugares se transforman de un día para otro.
Estoy deseando volver…. Pero en verano. Fui en invierno y llovió, nevó, hizo viento, sol, granizó… Todo el espectro…
