La Piedra de Rosetta

 la escritura egipcia más común era la demótica. Se usaba para escribir sobre asuntos prácticos: negocios, correspondencia y documentos diarios. La escritura demótica era una mezcla entre símbolos ideográficos y fonéticos, mucho más sencilla que la jeroglífica por tanto, y fue descifrada por Thomas Young.
3.- In 1799, near the Nile river, a large flat stone was found by Napoleon’s soldiers. They called it The Rosetta Stone since the name of the place was Rashid (Rosetta in French language). It had inscriptions in three types of writing: hieroglyphics, demotic and ancient Greek.
En 1799, cerca del río Nilo, las tropas de Napoleón encontraron una piedra grande y plana. La llamaron La Piedra de Rosetta porque el nombre del lugar era Rashid (Rosetta en francés). Tenía inscripciones en tres escrituras: jeroglífica, demótica y griego antiguo.
4.- The Rosetta Stone was carved in 196 B.C. to honour the Pharaoh. In fact, the same list of all the good things the Pharaoh had done for the people of Egypt was repeated in hieroglyphic, demotic and Greek scripts. This time, Jean- Francois Champollion, a French archaeologist, could decipher the hieroglyphics.
La piedra de Rosetta fue tallada en el 196 B.C. para glorificar al faraón. La misma lista de todas las buenas cosas que él había hecho por el pueblo egipcio estaba repetida en jeroglífico, demótico y griego. Esta vez, Jean- Francois Champollion, un arqueólogo francés, pudo descifrar los jeroglíficos.
5.- The Word hieroglyphic comes from two Greek words: hieros and glyphe. “Hieros” means holy and “glyphe” means writing. Therefore, hieroglyphic was the holy writing, only used to write religious texts or to carve religious places as pyramids (keops, Kefren or Mikerinos) or sanctuaries (Luxor or Karnack).
La palabra jeroglífico proviene de dos palabras griegas: hieros and glyphe. “Hieros” significa sagrado y “glyphe” escritura. Por tanto, jeroglífico es la palabra sagrada, sólo usada para escribir textos religiosos o en lugares de adoración como las pirámides (Keops, Kefren o Mikerinos) o los templos (Luxor o Karnack).
6.- Jean-Francois Champollion (23 December 1790- 4 March 1832) was a savant in languages. However, he was ignored by the French academic community for years due to his lack of political correctness. It was his tenacity what make him successful. He translated parts of the Rosetta Stone in 1822, showing the bases of the Egyptian writing system.
Jean-Francois Champollion (23 de diciembre de 1790- 4 de marzo de 1832) fue desde la infancia un prodigio para las lenguas. Pero fue ignorado por la comunidad académica durante años debido a problemas políticos. Fue su tenacidad lo que le hizo triunfar. Trasladó partes de La Piedra de Rosetta en 1822 mostrando las bases del sistema de escritura Egipcio.
7.-  Champollion deciphered the hieroglyphs with the help of his predecessors’ work: Athanasius Kirchner (a German Jesuit), Silvestre de Sacy (a French orientalist), Johan David Akerblad (a Swedish diplomat), Thomas Young (an English polymath), and William John Bankes (an important explorer).
Champollion descifró los jeroglíficos con ayuda del trabajo de sus predecesores: Athanasius Kirchner (un jesuita alemán), Silvestre de Sacy (un orientalista francés), Johan David Akerblad (un diplomático suizo), Thomas Young (un polifacético inglés) y William John Bankes (un famoso explorador).
8.- There is a museum to honour Champollion in his birthplace in Figeac in Lot. It was inaugurated in 1986 to show his life and works but the museum also recounts the history of writing. The main wall is covered in pictograms which imitate the original ideograms of the whole world.
Hay un museo para recorder a Champollion en su lugar de nacimiento: Figeac in Lot. Fue inaugurado en 1986 y muestra su vida y trabajos y, también, hace un recorrido por la historia de la escritura. La fachada esta cubierta de pictogramas que imitan los originales ideogramas de todos los lugares del mundo.
