English1.- When and why did you decide to start to draw and paint?
I didn't really start for a long time - until I was in University. I started playing around on the computer, drawing teddy bears out of circles in Paint Shop Pro.

2.- What is your technique?
I start and end on the computer. Now I pretty much only work in Photoshop (CS3 right now). So, I do a rough sketch first. Getting the shapes right.

Then I either block out the base colours (for realistic images) or use paths to create outlines (for cartoon images). I use a lot of layers. At this point I'll probably work on the background before colouring in the foreground subject. There's a step-by-step example of my technique online at http://amanda.dd.com.au/gallery/current/artemis-how.html

3.- What your inspiration?
I find inspiration everywhere! Book covers, movies, even some advertising is beautiful! Of course, the Internet is an unending source of inspiration. Communities like Elfwood, AFAE, and Whitechapel are some of my favourite sources. There's always something there to give you new ideas.

4.- Any difference between digital and classical art?
I think there's an enormous difference. Maybe not a lot in the finished product, but definitely in technique. I'm in awe of anyone who can use real paint, especially watercolours - phew, they're so unforgiving! I love using a computer - it isn't messy, you can separate everything with layers, it's really portable and there's a lot of forgiveness (I love 'undo'!). I guess the only thing I miss is that sense of having created one, single, truly unique work. Digital art is so easily duplicated. Of course, that can be advantageous too.

5.- Some favourite artists? Why?
Early on I was most inspired by Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell. I had an epiphany whilst reading about their process - they use models! OK so that seems really obvious, but until then I'd thought really amazing artists could just pull images fully formed from their heads. Some people probably can do that, but it was so nice to find out you don't have to! So now I pose for photos for a lot of my images, or get my husband to.

6.- Some favourite myth or legend?
Oooh, I have so many. In primary school, it was 'The Hobbit' (my mum threatened to take it off me when I was reading it for about the 20th time). In high school, it was the 'Dragonlance' series, and 'Lord of the Rings' of course. I'm addicted to fantasy books and movies, I own 100s and it would be ever do hard to pick just one favourite.

7.- Any wish for next year?
I'll just wish for as much 'free' time as possible to keep creating art!
