Tom Cunliffe I have wanted to read this book for a long time, and decided to take the plunge on discovering this new translation by John E Woods. This is a monster of a book - at 854 closely typeset pages, it is going to take a long time to read: in my case it too me the best part of a month. One of the main themes of this books is the experience of “time”. The patients at the mountain sanatorium initially arrive for what they think is going to be stay of a few weeks, but inevitably they end up staying on for months and years, and even return for further “treatment” when they have tried to return to normal life below in “flatland”.
Tom Cunliffe is the owner of the successful literary blog A Common Reader at www.acommonreader.org.uk. He lives with his wife Margaret in East Sussex, England. He has had a lengthy career in I.T. and now has more time to devote to his many interests including reading, walking and playing the mandolin. He also runs websites for other people including a pacifist organisation and an art society |
