 Give de Eye, 1

by Dominique d'Orange

Emerging from the disillusionment in modernism, the art and philosophy movement postmodernism set great store by  consumption and media.

The post WW II era confronted people with the uncertainties of modern life.
Doubt was cast on concepts as truth and authenticity, resulting in eclecticism and irony.

The public realized that truth and moral values are relative to each individual. Individualisation was a significant change in the pursuit of moral worth and happiness in postmodern society.

All these social changes and the boom of mass media led to a different view on art. In visual arts, the term postmodern refers to a wide variety of art movements  which are in contradiction to modernism at the end of the 20th century.

Postmodern artists were no longer bound by the 20th century avant-garde values and norms. Each artist felt the freedom to both devise a theory and to work in a jumble of various styles since maintaining one coherent style became a matter of minor importance. Individual creativity and a constant creation process were given preference to skills and mainstream behaviour. The artists’ individualist cynical message was brought into focus, often exposing lies and criticizing institutions.
This postmodern populist figurative art conflates high and low culture through the use of industrial materials and pop culture imagery. To express themselves postmodern artists utilize loud colours and a diversity of media such as reproductions and samples as a useful means to generate a meaning. New art forms such as graffiti, installation art, conceptual art, multimedia and video art arose.

Art has become a product for the consumer who wants to be shocked and stimulated in a playful culture of profusion, pleasure and beauty. Later on the slightly superficial art gained depth and meaning thanks to the attention the artists paid to people and culture.
Less is a bore.
