“Marcel Duchamp and the Forestay Waterfall”: Symposium and Concert : 6-9 May 2010 Exhibitions : 6 May-13 June 2010 Cully, Switzerland
In August 1946, the illustrious artist Marcel Duchamp, whose revolutionary work profoundly influences 20th century art, spent a few days at the Bellevue Hotel near Chexbres (today The BaronTavernier). During his stay he discovered the Forestay waterfall which became the starting point and eventually the landscape of his famous final masterpiece: "Etant donnés: 1° la chute d'eau, 2° le gaz d'éclairage" (Given: 1. The Waterfall, 2. The Illuminating Gas). Work on this installation occupied the artist secretly for the last 20 years of his life. In 1969, one year after Duchamp’s death, the installation was revealed to the public for the first time. To celebrate the fortieth anniversary of this unveiling, the Association Kunsthalle Marcel Duchamp, in collaboration with the Philadelphia Museum of Art and ECAL (Haute ecole d’art et de design Lausanne), is pleased to present “Marcel Duchamp and the Forestay waterfall,” a multidisciplinary event in Cully. We hope you will join us on this unique occasion. A detailed program and concept of events is available. Please contact us with any inquiries.
