Ann Timmermans
Critical reflections, ideas, methods and the influence of the spirit of times are determining factors in both ethics and art. In the 18th century Kant attempted to separate the areas of science, art and ethics but this was perceived as a restriction of creativity. In earlier days art was described as an expression which followed the aesthetic principles, something beautiful. The purpose was mimesis or copying reality, fortunately photography put an end to this in later days, providing the artist with a freedom to express his own reality, consequently allowing art to grow. Reflections of an era, artworks have provided historians and scientists with details of the culture and a clear view upon a particular period. Art had been restricted for ages but was finally freed from its elitist, religious and royal straightjacket. God’s glory was no longer the purpose of art. The artist’s role changed over the centuries. Tradesmen became creators who may now show off their personalities, often becoming their trademarks. Time is a major influence on the success of an artist: Bacon’s dark paintings became successful after the second World War because the population wanted to rebel, aching to experience something new and experimental. Art introduces an alternative glance besides having the ability to restore hope in difficult times. Nowadays art has moved to a point where it transmits emotions, forms, concepts. Each style and technique reacts against a former one, constantly evolving towards new expressions. The wide range of available media see to the even larger gamut of styles. Fine art has evolved from its dreamy classical interpretation towards a contemporary conceptual notion which confronts us with reality, the misery, chaos and torture in society. Be it a mouthpiece for human rights violations, a moving image or an innovating form, art gives meaning to life. Read more about Dominique d'Orange: Contact: Isabel del Río, arts editor:
