Ovid’s sculpture in Constanta (Romania)

Ovid square is in the old part of the city. It is a simple square below a brilliant dark blue sky which reminds the waves of the Black Sea and the colour of the river Danube, both of them so near and so enigmatic.
In the middle of the square, there is a sculpture made of bronze by Ettore Ferrari in 1887 to honour the great Latin poet Ovid, author of the Metamorphosis and Halieutica.
Ovid was exiled to Constanta (called Tomis in Roman times) by the emperor August. According to the poet, it was a “mistake” and current historians disagree about what sort of “mistake” he made: sexual, politician, religious?
Anyway, he arrives to his exile in the 8th a. C. and in spite of his requests, he never was forgiven, dying in this city in the 16th.
Here, he was sad, he missed his wife, family and friends. However, the neighbourhood was friendly with him: he received regular presents of bread and wine and, still, people of Constanta are proud of showing to the tourist stocks of Ovid’s times.

The sculpture is in front of the Archeological museum (very interesting to visit too) and looking at the sea, at that Black Sea that Ovid looked waiting for a ship which brought the anxious new: his pardon.

El Monumento a Ovidio en Constanza (Rumanía)

La plaza de Ovidio está en la parte antigua de la ciudad. Es una austera plaza bajo un cielo brillante y añil que recuerda las olas del Mar Negro y el color del Danubio, ambos tan cerca y tan enigmáticos.
En medio de la plaza hay una escultura hecha de bronce por el artista italiano Ettore Ferrari en 1887 para rendir honor al gran poeta latino Ovidio, autor de las Metamorfosis y de la Haliéutica.
Ovidio fue desterrado a Constanza (antigua Tomis) por el emperador Augusto. Según el poeta fue un “error” y los actuales historiadores no se ponen de acuerdo sobre qué clase de “error” Ovidio cometió: ¿sexual, político, religioso?
En cualquier caso, llegó a su exilio en el año 8 d.C. y a pesar de sus ruegos, nunca fue perdonado muriendo aquí ocho años después.
En Tomis, estaba triste y echaba de menos a su mujer, familia y amigos. Sin embargo, los vecinos fueron amables con él: recibía regulares regalos de pan y vino y, todavía, la gente de Constanza está orgullosa de poder enseñar a los turistas cepas de la época de Ovidio.
La escultura está en frente del museo arqueológico (muy interesante de ver también) y de cara al mar, a aquel Mar Negro que Ovidio miró esperando un barco que trajera la ansiada noticia: su perdón.

Es bueno encontrar personas que difunden el esfuerzo que implica hoy por hoy incentivar la lectura de poesía, gracias por el artículo de la presentación de nuestra revista
