Isabel del Río CAMPOAMOR, THE GARDEN OF A POET.
I
 | | Campoamor (Spain) | used to write in this section about the meaning of the trees in the Celtic Druidic Alphabet following Robert Graves’ teachings in “The White Goddess”. However, this month I am going to make a break as in August, I spent some weeks in a paradise called “Dehesa de Campoamor” in the Southwest of Spain, near Alicante and Torrevieja.Ramón de Campoamor was a Spanish poet of the 19th century who used to rest in this land. He was ill and discovered the benefits of its micro weather: in summer, much fresher than Torrevieja or other villages around it; in winter, absolutely mild. He bought a big property and spent his time here, reading and writing, and enjoying the marvelous views of a sea, the Mediterranean, surrounded by cliffs of red clay and other minerals which are the reason of its peculiar fantastic weather. Pines, eucalyptus, lemon trees, palms and very many cacti with flowers of different colours grow among white and pink oleanders and wild roses. It was an oasis for a poet, today the property has been sold and it is an oasis for everybody who wants a rest, still not very busy and with interesting places to visit in the surroundings. Some kilometers in direction to Murcia, we find a little sea, nearly a lake, called “Mar Menor” (Minor Sea). Its beaches (Lo Pagan and Santiago de la Ribera) are full of spas specialized in rheumatic people, once again the reason is the clay. Nurses cover patients’ bodies with it and aches stop: next winter will be better and the current summer is fantastic with good meals and parties among palm trees and other flowers. We went on an excursion to Orihuela, another village near Campoamor. There, another poet of the 20th century, Miguel Hernández, was born. You can visit the little house, nearly a shack, where he lived at the shadow of a giant Gothic church. It is not strange that he was communist and finished his days in a prison after the Spanish Civil War. “Campoamor” means “Land of Love” in honour of the poet’s name but always a name guards a truth. Nothing is casual in this Earth! *Yareah magazine es una revista cultural fundada y dirigida por el escritor Martín Cid **Directora de arte: Isabel del Río
