Director: Tim Burton – Cast: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Moretz, Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer – :

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. Two decades pass and Barnabas has the world at his feet-or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard. A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972.

Variety Reviews (Justin Chang) http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117947517?refcatid=31

Few director-star partnerships are as consistently eccentric or malleable as that of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, but even loyalists will detect an odor of mothballs clinging to their eighth bigscreen collaboration, “Dark Shadows.” Outfitting ABC’s cult-worshipped, occult-themed soap opera with super-slick production values and a tone that veers unsteadily between kooky comedy and gothic horror, this bizarre but weirdly bloodless retro-camp exercise is neither funny nor eerie enough to seduce the uninitiated, and will court bemused reactions at best from the series’ still-estimable fan following. Pic’s pedigree could intrigue auds for a spell, but long-term B.O. bewitchment seems unlikely.

Total Film (Matt Glasby) http://www.totalfilm.com/reviews/cinema/dark-shadows

One of the strangest mainstream releases of recent times, Dark Shadows’ demented gothic melodrama/fish-out-of-water comedy/creature feature feels like you’ve slipped into a Burton fever-dream.

Common Sense Media http://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/dark-shadows

Celebrated director Tim Burton brings many of his unique touches to DARK SHADOWS, including a dazzling, intricate, gothic design; heavy, crazy makeup (and blonde wigs) for his characters; and a penchant for high operatic style. In certain ways, it comes closest to his best and most personal work.
