West Coast Suite is a group of abstract canvases and several multi-media panels painted by Sylvia Tait over the past two years. The series demonstrates a sharp focus on metaphysics and construction of the Subject – that is, the invention of symbols, colour and surface sensuality derived from long periods of reflection by the artist on past experience and emotions. When realizing the Subject in paint, Tait employs the abstract language synonymous with her later career; a language characterized by large ovoids, tracks, concentricities, and strands of partitioned colour.

A new interest in the dissecting the Subject into parts marks West Coast Suite. When describing the expressive structure of the body of work, Tait explains, “fragmenting, breaking up larger colour blocks and blowing them away is a metaphor as I see it.”
