• Innovative new social network scoops Startup Showcase Award at Apps World
London, 14th December – Pocket App, the UK’s largest independent app developer, attended this year’s Apps World 2015, one of the UK’s most prestigious exhibitions of pioneering development and innovation in multi-platform apps. Pocket App is a regular exhibitor at Apps World, demonstrating its cutting edge work in the app development industry and offering expert thought leadership via talks and panel discussions.
At this year’s exhibition, Paul Swaddle, CEO of Pocket App, sat on the judging panel of the ‘Startup Showcase’ challenge, inviting 15 startup companies to present their business idea to a panel of five technology industry experts. Joining Paul on the panel were high-profile business figures such as Alastair Cameron, Co-Founder of Startacus, and Donna Sewell, CEO of Legal Edge.
Overcoming considerable competition, the judges named helpfulpeeps as the winner, a new social network that connects people from all walks of life who are in need of support with potential helpers for free. Founded in Bristol by Simon Hills and Saf Nazeer, helpfulpeeps was developed to facilitate any call for help, whether it be looking for assistance with gardening, proofreading a CV or tech support. Users create a profile and are able to post requests for help or respond to offer it, and acquire ‘karma points’ after helping a fellow user. helpfulpeeps is young but already proving to be a great success, with a fast-growing following in Bristol and London, and users in 45 countries worldwide.
Saf Nazeer, Co-Founder of helpfulpeeps, commented on winning the Startup Showcase, “Our vision is to build a global network with millions of people helping each other every day. We’ve had a great reception since launching the site, and winning this competition is a promising demonstration that helpfulpeeps is on the right track. Paul and the other judges have given us a wealth of excellent advice that is sure to help us grow, and we plan to stay in touch and further benefit from their experience going forward.”
helpfulpeeps is building a large following in the charity sector, whereby several organisations are finding the site to be a particularly effective method of finding volunteers. Pocket App also has a strong presence in the charity sector, having recently won silver awards in both the UK Digital Experience Awards and the UK App Design Awards for My Poppy, an app developed to allow supporters to make a digital donation to the annual Poppy Appeal campaign. Having also developed apps for well-known charities Breast Cancer Care and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and written about the need for charities to embrace digital transformation, Paul Swaddle recognises the significant benefits that helpfulpeeps can offer.
After presenting helpfulpeeps with the award, Paul Swaddle commented, “It’s been a pleasure to meet Simon and Saf, and to hear about the exciting growth of helpfulpeeps. Together, Simon and Saf have developed a highly innovative concept that will not only be very appealing to investors, but also addresses a great social need, by enabling people to simply help each other out in everyday life.”
