Game of Thrones season 6. Filming began in July 2015, and some locations in Spain included the Castle of Zafra in Guadalajara, the Bardenas Reales Natural Park, the Alcazaba in Almería, and the Castle of Santa Florentina in Canet de Mar. Beautiful and mysterious places! Today, ten things about the Castle of Zafra.
The producers of HBO were looking for a remote site and away from any building. No doubt, the find this place here!
The castle is situated atop a large rock at an altitude of 1,400 metres (4,600 ft). It occupies the whole of the outcrop, which runs in a north-east to south-west alignment.
Built in the late 12th in the Sierra de Caldereros in Guadalajara (Spain), it stands on the site of a former Visigothic and Moorish fortification that fell into Christian hands in 1129.
Thus, it had strategic importance for its situation on the border between Christian and Muslim territories.
The reconquest of the Iberian peninsula deprived the castle of its former strategic importance, and from the 16th century onwards it began to fall into ruin.
At the far south-west end is the entrance tower, after which is an open courtyard which leads to the enclosed Place of Arms. The highest point of the outcrop is occupied by the Tower of Homage, with the lord’s chambers and kitchens. The castle could accommodate as many as 500 people.
Once, the entrance was reachable via a route said to be of “great ingenuity and appearance” but this disappeared long ago, and visitors have to reach it by climbing a ladder now.
The castle remained the property of the Spanish state until 1971, when it was sold at auction. The purchaser, Sanz Polo, spent the next 30 years and most of his fortune on rebuilding the castle.
The material used was sandstone.
It can be visited with permission from the owners.
