For sure you love Longmire TV show and you are looking forward to seeing season 4. We need to meet Sheriff Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) and his team, but we need to know more about his friend Henry Standing Bear (Lou Diamond Phillips), a Cheyenne man fighting for justice. Did you know that Standing Bear is not any name? It has a long as well as important history.
Standing Bear (1839 – 1908) was a Ponca Native American chief who claimed in US District Court in Omaha that Native Americans were people within the meaning of the law and had the right of habeas corpus. He had a historical success!
Afterwards, Chief Standing Bear traveled in the eastern United States and Europe, speaking about Indian rights in forums. He was sponsored by Indian advocate and former abolitionist Wendell Phillips. During this tour, he won the support of many people and of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
Yes, I think they have chosen a perfect name for fictional character Henry Standing Bear, a brave and intelligent men. But if we keep think slowly, the name could be perfect for actor Lou Diamond Phillips too. Don’t you think so?
