Game of Thrones season 1 was amazing and everybody was delighted with it. Most of the characters were played by great actors like Michelle Fairley, who plays as Catelyn Stark, Peter Dinklage, who plays as Tyrion Lannister, and the young Jack Gleeson, who plays as Joffrey Baratheon and was the great revelation of season 1. But of course, the best was Sean Bean as Eddard Stark. His personality and death were the main storyline of the season and created the mythology of the show.

Eddard Stark’s decapitation was a climax preceded by some thrilling episodes full of intrigue and expectation. His death was absolutely justified and the plot was very well constructed.

However and during the following seasons, important characters have died precipitously and without creating any drama. For example in season 3, the wedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey is one of the most memorable events of the book series, commonly named ‘The Red Wedding,’ many members of the Stark family were killed there. But the TV show hadn’t prepared audiences for this tragedy, and we had the feeling that the reason of this massacre was a mere meaningless spectacle.

From then, other characters have died without enough dramatic tension or simply have disappeared without any explanation. Where are Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) and his friends? Why Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) have turned into a crazy woman when she was a little heroine? Why Tywin Lannister’s death (Charles Dance) was solved in seconds? He was an important character and his final deserved some attention!

However and in my opinion, the worst mistake was Jon Snow’s death (Kit Harington). Every event and battle in season 5 were speaking about the birth of a great hero in The Wall, able to fight (and win) the White Walkers. His final was absolutely disappointing!

Now, the only thing missing is the death of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and her dragons in Season 6, and we will have a surreal work!

Books and TV series are different. Any hero or great villain can have a silly end.

When I see articles like this I question if the writer has been paying attention to the series at all or is just putting this out for the sake of controversy. It is well established in the GoT lore that “dead” is not DEAD and expecting any studio to NOT play up a cliff hanger like this to the fullest is either naive or false outrage. A discussion of how this could possibly play out in the show rather than a semi-tantrum at HBO would be a better approach to this subject.

If you think this has a happy ending, then you haven’t been paying attention.
