Swedish actress Noomi Rapace (Prometheus) will star in the biopic of the diva Maria Callas. The film, directed by Niki Caro (North Country), has been one of the projects presented by Media Content in the first day of the 68th Cannes Film Festival.

The film, based on the biography of Callas ‘Too Proud, Too Fragile’ written by Alfonso Signorini, shows the passionate relationship that had famous opera singer with the Greek shipping industry magnate, Aristotle Onassis (15 January 1906 – 15 March 1975), for over twenty years.

“This movie is about an extraordinary woman whose deepest desire is to lead an ordinary life with the man of her choice,” said the film’s producer.

Maria Callas (Manhattan NY, December 2, 1923 – Paris, September 16, 1977) was known for her wide vocal range and intensely dramatic portrayals in operas including Tosca, Die Walkure and Turandot. Her fans called her “La Divina” (the divine one).

The production of the film will be in charge of three major companies: the Italian group De Angelis, Belladonna Productions (New York) and the English Ealing Studios and Londinium Films.

Actress Noomi Rapace previously starred in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Prometheus, and Prometheus 2.

The film’s makers will be looking for distributors at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Their movie faces competition from an HBO biopic, announced last year, in which Meryl Streep will play the singer.

“An opera begins long before the curtain goes up and ends long after it has come down. It starts in my imagination, it becomes my life, and it stays part of my life long after I’ve left the opera house.” Opera singer Maria Callas.
