The series is directed by Roland Joffé and due on Memorial Day. Some of the characters are based on real people. Today, the real life of Kit Acklin. Actor Trevor Donovan plays the role as Kit Acklin. Ten things you should know:
1.- Christopher B. (Kit) Acklin who was a Texas Ranger in the 1840s.
2.- He was born in in Huntsville, Alabama. Huntsville was founded by Kit’s grandfather, Col. John Hunt.
3.- We don’t know when Kit Acklin moved to Texas. But he was one of the participants in the August 12, 1840, Battle of Plum Creek.
4.- The Battle of Plum Creek was a clash between allied Tonkawa, militia, and Rangers of the Republic of Texas and a huge Comanche war party under Chief Buffalo Hump, which took place near Lockhart, Texas, following the Great Raid of 1840 as the Comanche war party returned to west Texas.
5.- Acklin is mentioned as Kit Ackland in the Battle of Bandera Pass. This battle and the fact that 50 Rangers had held their ground against hundreds of the Comanche marked a change in the way the frontier wars would be fought, and marked the turning of the tide in the war between Texas and the Comanches.
6.- Afterwards, in August 1844, Cicero Rufus Perry and Kit Acklin were injured and left for dead at Nueces canyon in a fight with Comanche Indians.
“The Indians fired at him (Acklin), bullets and arrows. He was hit twice in the body and an arrow battered out teeth and ripped through his cheek… But he (Acklin) didn’t stumble.”
7.- Acklin, a tough man, recovered from his injuries and relinquished command on 1 Aug 1846.
8.- Years later, in 1850s, Kit Acklin moved to California, Mariposa County.
9.- According to the 1870 Census, Kit Acklin was a constable of Mariposa Co., California.
10.- There, he died on 13 December 1871.
