The reaction follows reports in Watford of a new charity service for young children with learning disabilities. A Russett School spokesperson provides a statement.

A new service for children with learning disabilities has been launched in Watford, with sessions open to parents who have children under the age of five. The Children Centre will provide parental support and networking opportunities once a week, as well as a crèche for children to play in.

Qualified play workers will work with the families to show them different ways to communicate and play with the children, and they’ll also run one on one sessions so that specific needs can be identified. “These families each have differing and individual needs,” claimed Children’s Centre manager Sarah Fishwick.

“We can help the child to make friends, get out and about, play and learn. Our support will help [parents] to meet other parents in the same situation and develop their parenting skills. We want to help families to support each other and receive encouragement from others who have already been through similar situations.”

The Russett School, a specialist learning difficulty school based in Cheshire, takes a keen interest in reports such as this. Catherine Lewis, Headteacher provided this statement: “It’s always great to hear of new services being opened for children with learning difficulties, and hopefully the parents will be able to make the most of this opportunity.

“It can be challenging trying to find activities for children with learning disabilities that are fun and exciting, which is why families need help and support. They also need help finding the best schools to provide their children with a healthy learning environment, and here at The Russett School that’s exactly what we offer. We are committed to offering high quality education to all our pupils, helping them to develop skills and preparation them for adult life.”

The Russett School is Outstanding in every area and is based in Weaverham, Cheshire. It is the only specialist learning difficulty school in the country to have achieved the RE Gold Quality mark. This outstanding all through school is very proud of its work in catering for children and young people with Severe Learning Difficulties and Complex Needs.
