Vikings Season 3 and Season 4. Who Was Lagertha Lothbrok? What Will Be Her Future In The Series?

Lagertha Lothbrok (actress Katheryn Winnick) is my favorite character on the show. She is clever, brave and absolutely loyal to her principles. In fact, she is one of the few characters who has been loyal to the king Ragnar (actor Travis Fimmel) from the beginning. Neither Rollo or Floki or Siggy or Athelstan and even Bjorn, Ragnar’s son, have maintained such a true behavior.

However Lagertha had reasons to be angry with Ragnar. He took a new wife, Princess Aslaug (Brynhildr ’s daughter), forcing her to leave her home and start a new life. Thus, she became Earl Ingstad, helping with her army to Ragnar when he needed it, and after being betrayed by Kalf (actor Ben Robson), she continued helping Ragnar even when she didn’t support her in claiming her county. I think Lagertha is much better than Ragnar, even as a smart strategist, and the last episode, ‘Breaking Point’, demonstrated it. In fact, she solved the battle in front of Paris gates. Then and according to the series, she should have a key role in Vikings Season 4 together with Rollo and maybe Bjorn.

But who was the true Lagertha? Today, ten things you should know:

1.- Lagertha is a legendary figure, a Viking shieldmaiden from what is now Norway, and the onetime wife of the famous, and also legendary, Viking Ragnar Lothbrok.

2.- Her tale, as recorded by the chronicler Saxo in the 12th century, may be a reflection of tales about Norse deities.

3.- Saxo recounts: Ladgerda, a skilled Amazon, who, though a maiden, had the courage of a man, and fought in front among the bravest with her hair loose over her shoulders. All-marvelled at her matchless deeds, for her locks flying down her back betrayed that she was a woman.

4.- Some historians have identified Lagertha with the Valkyries, by her power of flight.

5.- Anyway, her origins were really difficult. Lagertha suffered from Fro, king of Sweden. He invaded Norway and killed the Norwegian king Siward, putting the women of the dead king’s family into a brothel for public humiliation.

6.- But when Ragnar Lodbrok came with an army to avenge his grandfather Siward. Many of the women and of course Lagertha (she was the chief) fought on Ragnar’s side being the key to Ragnar’s victory.

7.- Immediately, Ragnar fell in love with Lagertha, the Brave.

8.- But she put ordeals to get her love. Ragnar had to fight against a terrible bear and a hound. Thus, he won the hand of Lagertha in marriage.

9.- Afterwards, Ragnar (who, according to Saxo, was still annoyed that Lagertha had set beasts against him) divorced her in order to marry the daughter of King Herrauor of Sweden.

10.- Anyway and like in Vikings TV series, she was always loyal to him.

Lagertha is my favorite too! She’s brave and I think she’ll continue the way she is right now. Hope she and Ragnar get married again ^^

    • Mine too! Thanks for the comment, Melike. Nice to meet you

Lagertha is extra-awesome in a show full of awesome characters. It doesn’t hurt that Katheryn Winnick is a skilled martial artist as well as being breathtakingly beautiful.

Michael Hirst wrote a little comic book that told a different version of how she and Ragnar met, depicting Ragnar basically stealing her from Rollo, who had met her first. It’s a big part of the tension between the brothers in the early seasons of the show.

I thought the seer said she would die at the hands of a trickster?

  • Jane Doe

I’ve thought the same that she has been the only one who has not betrayed Ragnar out of the lot. Even when Ragnar betrayed her she was still kind to Aslaug …. Michael Hirst has mentioned that the issues with the earldom will be resolved unexpectedly. I think she’ll marry Kalf because she gets pregnant … I’d rather she goes back to Ragnar but I don’t think this is going to happen!

As the cricket season draws to a close, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) can report a surge in popularity for guests seeking a full day of luxury hospitality at Lord’s during a Test Match in 2016. In the Home of Cricket’s most iconic venues – the Captains’ Lounge and Marylebone Suite – hospitality packages which included a hearty breakfast, sumptuous four-course lunch and luxury afternoon tea, sold out quickly for the first three days of the England v Sri Lanka and England v Pakistan Investec Test Matches. Private Boxes with the best views of the action for up to 18 guests also sold out fast for the same days. MCC revealed a sharp increase in revenue for its 2016 Sri Lanka Test Match hospitality packages compared with 2014 when the team last played England at Lord’s. Revenues for hospitality were up by nearly 30% over the same period in 2014 whilst private box sale revenues were up by a healthy 60%. Nick Kenton, MCC Head of Sales, Meetings & Events and Hospitality, said: “2016 has been a fantastic year for enjoying a day of cricket whilst experiencing the very best food, drink and hospitality that Lord’s has to offer. “This year’s sales figures show that hospitality packages at Lord’s were in huge demand and continue to be a key part of the summer sporting calendar.” Lord’s also expects high demand for its new hospitality packages, to be released this autumn for 2017 matches. These include England v South Africa from 6th to 10th July and England v West Indies from 7th to 11th September.
