The 16th Havana Film Festival New York (HFFNY) wraps up with its Closing Night Award Ceremony and the N.Y. premiere of the highly anticipated Mexican Film Gloria, by Swiss director Christian Keller. This controversial biopic chronicles the astonishing life of international pop star Gloria Trevi, the “Mexican Madonna.” Well-known Mexican actress Sofía Espinosa (Cappadocia, HBO), and director Christian Keller will be present for a Q&A after de screening. “With its dry-eyed view of the seamier side of show business, it is a superior pop-star portrait. Ms. Espinosa’s ferocious performance evokes both Madonna and Miley Cyrus,” said film critic Stephen Holden, New York Times.
The 16th HFFNY (April 9-17, 2015) features an outstanding program of over 45 films from Latin America, the Caribbean and U.S.,including World, U.S., and NY premieres, as well as award winners from Havana International Film Festival, Cannes, Guadalajara, and Berlin. A true Latin American film feast, it takes place all over the city at DGA Theater, King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center at NYU, Museum of the Moving Image, Quad Cinema, and School of Visual Arts (SVA).
