Outlander Starz. In the last episode of Outlander TV show, titled “By the Pricking of My Thumbs”, and aired on April 11, 2015, Claire and Geillis were accused of wizardry and they are going to be judged. Why? Who was a witch in old Scotland? It seems that any independent woman.
Yes, fanaticism and superstition made that independent women were accused of witchcraft in Europe during centuries. But Scotland holds the reputation of having been Europe’s biggest persecutor of witches.
Across the 17th and 18th centuries, more than 3500 suspected witches were strangled, hanged, drowned or burned at the stake. Why?
This terrible fanaticism started in times of King James VI (1590). He began to believe that he and his future bride had been cursed by a coven of witches, and Geillis Ducan was accused of being the ‘boss.’ The only sin of this poor maid was to have a gift for helping the sick and infirm.
Then, there is a clear intention choosing this name for the character played by actress Lotte Verbeek in Outlander Starz.
Anyway, we hope Geillis in Outlander finishes better than Geillis in 1590. Because the last one was thrown in jail when her torturers declared they had found a devil’s mark on her body.
A friend of Geillis, called Agnes, was also tortured. She was shackled to her cell wall and stabbed in the face with an iron fork which pierced through her cheeks and tongue… We also hope that Claire Randall’s destiny (actress Caitriona Balfe) will be different to Agnes’ fate!
The trials of those suspected of being involved in the coven lasted two years and sparked a wave of similar events across Scotland. This wave last for centuries. In fact, the last Scottish woman to face trial for witchcraft was jailed in 1944!
We hope that Claire Randall And Geillis Duncan were saved by Jamie Fraser and Dougal MacKenzie and fiction and reality were different for once.
Enjoy your day, Yareah friends. Art is everywhere and up to you!
