HPI welcomes legal crackdown on mileage correction firms set for 2018

HPI, provider of the and anti-clocking champion, applauds the announcement of new changes to EU legislation to outlaw mileage correction firms by mid-May 2018. HPI has been a long-running campaigner against mileage correction firms, not only lobbying Government for reform, but steadfastly raising awareness of the risks of buying a vehicle with a fraudulent mileage to better protect used car buyers.

The practice of ‘clocking’ a car – adjusting the mileage reading to make it worth more – has been around for many years. It was made easier with the introduction of digital odometers, which removed the traditional tell-tale signs of tampering and more recently, along with an increase in the number of so-called ‘mileage correction firms’, which offer to alter a vehicle’s mileage, no questions asked.

One in 20 vehicles checked by HPI has a mileage discrepancy, highlighting the size of the issue. Used car buyers who unwittingly buy a clocked car, not only pay over the odds for the vehicle, leaving them severely out of pocket, but expose themselves and their passengers to potentially risky safety issues. A clocked vehicle could be hiding serious levels of wear and tear, having missed out on key servicing milestones. This is not only dangerous but could leave the owner facing expensive and unexpected repairs.

“Dodgy sellers will take advantage of any angle they can when offloading a car and clocking is one of the easiest ways they can make a fatter profit. We welcome this new legislation, which can’t come too soon,” says Neil Hodson, Managing Director for HPI. “HPI has been a committed campaigner against clocking and the exploitation of the mileage correction firm loophole, so we applaud the EU decision.

“Whilst the new rules don’t come in to play until 2018 and won’t end all instances of clocking, they will remove those firms that hide behind the label of legitimacy to help dishonest sellers adjust their mileage. A vehicle history check, such as can help protect consumers from buying a vehicle with something to hide, saving them cash and keeping them safe.”

The HPI Check includes as standard a mileage check against the National Mileage Register which holds over 170 million mileage readings. HPI also confirms whether a vehicle is currently recorded as stolen with the police, has outstanding finance against it or has been written-off, making it the best way for consumers to protect themselves from fraudsters looking to make a fast profit. In addition, the HPI Check offers a £30,000 *Guarantee in the event of the information it provides being inaccurate, offering added financial peace of mind to used car buyers.
