Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries or The Walking Dead. Everybody loves paranormal phenomena!

Zombies, vampires, every kind of monsters, visions, prophecies… Our time is a time of supernatural phenomena and TV shows are full of demons, ghosts, and other supernatural beings. But I’m wondering why. Why are vampires or zombies so popular? Why do we love skeletons and tombs? Even adventure TV shows like Game of Thrones or Vikings are full of nods to the hidden forces.

Do we live in such an alienated society that our only hope is to forget it in our free time? Many would answer yes. Me too.

The Vampire Diaries Season 6

We work too many hours to pay too many taxes and survive until the next day (to work again), like zombies. Thus, we are waiting for some supernatural event which liberates us, since we feel unable to escape our strenuous life. We need to fly as a vampire, to have the strength of a monster and the visions of a witch… We need to live listening to different prophets (Vikings Season 3) or to different men (Beauty & the Beast). And we need to live a hundred lifetimes (Forever) to find an explanation for our empty existence. Yes, we are like zombies, and we would like to be supernatural beings.

I love this sentence by Max Brooks: “That’s the thing about zombies. They don’t adapt and they don’t think. Literally, you could have a zombie on one side of a chain link fence and you could be on the other side and they could be trying to get to you and six feet down could be an open door and they will not go through that door in the fence. That’s why they’re so scary.” But I think we are scarier about our own existence that about horror films and TV shows.
