Sotheby’s Strongest Ever Sales of Contemporary Art in Europe. Combined Evening and Day Sale total: £140.4m / $214m / €189.3m. Pre-sale Estimate: £101.5–143.9m.
Over the course of the past two days, Sotheby’s recorded its highest ever total for sales of contemporary art in Europe. The two sales totalled £140.4m / $214m / €189.3m, led by Gerhard Richter’s monumental Abstraktes Bild, which sold for £30.4m, a new record for a work of art by any living European artist. This was the top price achieved across all London auction houses this week.

The Day Sale was led by Peter Doig’s masterful portrait of a bohemian gentleman, Cold Blooded, painted in 2003 shortly after the artist moved to Trinidad. The painting more than doubled its pre-sale estimate, selling for £1.3m / $1.9m / €1.7m (est. £400,000-600,000). Further to the record for Richter, new benchmarks were set across the sale series including for the pop pioneer Richard Hamilton and rising stars of the contemporary art scene, Jonas Wood and Klara Lidén.
