Not in ‘Jurassic World.’ A new dinosaur has just been found in Scotland. Latest news!
A team of paleontologists from the University of Edinburgh has found a new species of ichthyosaur who lived on the island of Skye 140 million years ago.
He looked like a dolphin and ate fish and other reptiles.
It has been called Dearcmhara Shawcross in honor of the Gaelic word for marine reptiles and of a person who donated some fossils of this species.
Lead researcher Dr Steve Brusatte, from the University of Edinburgh’s School of Geosciences, said: ‘During the time of dinosaurs, the waters of Scotland were prowled by big reptiles the size of motor boats.’

** Ichthyosaurs resembled both current fish and dolphins. Their heads were pointed. Their limbs had been transformed into flippers, and some species possessed a dorsal fin. Some species had larger bladed teeth to attack large animals. The eyes were very large, probably for deep diving. The neck was short and later species had a rather stiff trunk.
