1.- In the Middle Ages, Hildegarda von Bingen wrote theological, botanical, medicinal books, liturgical songs, and poems. She also supervised miniature illuminations in the Rupertsberg manuscript of her first work, Scivias.
2.- In the 14th century, Teresa Dieç painted large murals in Spanish churches.
3.- Diana Mantova was famous for her engravings during the Renaissance.
4.- Lavinia Fontana (1552 – 1614) was an Italian artist, who is regarded as the first woman artist working within the same sphere as her male counterparts.
5.- In the 16th century, Sofonisba Anguissola traveled to Rome where she was introduced to Michelangelo, who immediately recognized her talent, and to Milan, where she painted the Duke of Alba. Afterwards, she painted for the king Philip II of Spain.
6.- Artemisia Gentileschi (1593 – 1656) was an Italian Baroque painter. Today, she is considered one of the most accomplished painters in the generation following that of Caravaggio.
7.- Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun (1755 – 1842) left a legacy of 660 portraits and 200 landscapes. In addition to private collections, her works may be found at major museums, such as Hermitage Museum, London’s National Gallery, in Europe and the United States.
8.- Berthe Morisot was member of the circle of painters in Paris who became known as the Impressionists.
9.- Tamara Łempicka, commonly known as Tamara de Lempicka (1898 – 1980) was a Polish Art Deco painter and “the first woman artist to be a glamour star.”
10.- Angeles Santos Torroella was a Catalan surrealist painter, who died in 2013.
