Lindsay Lohan has been infected by a virus during the Christmas holidays. In French Polynesia, the actress went well until a strange virus appeared: the Chikungunya virus.
What do you know about the Chikungunya virus. Ten Things you should know:
1.- The virus is passed to humans by two species of mosquito of the genus Aedes: A. albopictus and A. aegypti.
2.- The strain of chikungunya spreading to the US from the Caribbean is most easily spread by A. aegypti.
3.- Animal reservoirs of the virus include monkeys, birds, cattle, and rodents.
4.- The best means of prevention is overall mosquito control and the avoidance of bites by any infected mosquitoes.
5.- It features sudden onset fever usually lasting two to seven days.
6.- Usually, pains last weeks or months but sometimes years.
7.- The mortality rate is a bit less than 1 in 1000.
8.- No specific treatment is known.
9.- Rest and fluids may be useful.
10.- It was discovered in Tanganyika, Africa, in 1952, but chikungunya virus outbreaks have occurred occasionally in Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Recently, outbreaks have spread the disease over a wider range.
We hope Lindsay Lohan recovers soon.
