Queen Latifah as Bessie Smith. ‘Bessie’

Yes, Queen Latifah will play the lead role in a new HBO biopic about blues singer Bessie Smith. She will also be an executive producer for the film, which is titled Bessie.

Bessie Smith (Chattanooga, Tennessee, April 15, 1894 – Clarksdale, Mississippi, September 26, 1937) was an American blues singer. The Empress of the Blues was the most popular female blues singer of the 1920s and 1930s. She is, along with Louis Armstrong, a major influence on other jazz vocalists. Her popular songs include ‘Nobody Knows When You’re Down and Out’ and collaborations with Louis Armstrong, such as ‘I Ain’t Gonna Play No Second Fiddle’ and ‘St. Louis Blues.’

The biopic is slated to release in 2015 and will also star Mo’Nique and Mike Epps.
