Ancient Women Artists. Luisa Ignacia Roldan Villavicencio, known as ‘La Roldana,’ was born in Seville (Spain) in September 8, 1652. Thus, she was Virgo and I have not met any Virgo person who dies rich. Of course, she was no exception.
Anyway, ‘La Roldana’ was a fantastic artist, and is recognized as one of the leading figures of the Andalusia Baroque sculpture of the late 17th and early 18th centuries: that is, of the Rococo.
Her father was the Spanish sculptor Pedro Roldan. She started to work with him, but her father disagree with her marriage with Luis Antonio Navarro, another artist. They escaped to Cadiz, where they set up a workshop and earned a good living selling to local churches.
Today, and since Christmas are close, enjoy these beautiful works by ‘La Roldana.’
Happiness does not always last, and her problems started in Madrid. She worked by the Spanish king in El Escorial, but he didn’t pay her… Remember that this girl was Virgo and the kingdom was bankrupt.
Luisa Roldan died in Madrid in absolute poverty being buried in the parish of St. Andrew in January 10, 1706.
