Salvador Dali

Salvador Dali was born on May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Spain. Dali’s older brother, also named Salvador, had died of gastroenteritis nine months earlier. Having the same name as his brother was not pleasant for the artist. He always had the feeling of living with a ghost. In fact, when he was five, Dali was taken to his brother’s grave and told by his parents that he was his brother’s reincarnation. Yes, not nice at all!

His father was a strict notary (they never got along!) but his mother, Felipa Domenech, was sweet and encouraged her son’s artistic endeavors.

In February 1921, Dali’s mother died of breast cancer, and his father married his deceased wife’s sister. Peculiar! However, Dali respected his aunt.

In 1922, Salvador Dali moved into the Students’ Residence) in Madrid and studied in the Academy of Fine Arts. He had long hair and drew attention as an eccentric and dandy. Here, he became close friends with Pepin Bello, Luis Buñuel, and Federico Garcia Lorca. Dali experimented with Dada, which influenced his work throughout his life.

Dali was expelled from the Academy in 1926, Dali was expelled from the Academia in 1926. Then, he made his first visit to Paris, where he met Pablo Picasso, whom he revered.

Influenced by Diego Velazquez (Las Meninas), Dali grew a flamboyant mustache, which became an iconic trademark of his appearance for the rest of his life.

In August 1929, Dali met his lifelong and primary muse, and future wife Gala. In the same year, Dalí officially joined the Surrealist group in the Montparnasse quarter of Paris.

The Surrealists welcomed what Dali called his paranoiac-critical method of accessing the subconscious for greater artistic creativity.

In 1931, Salvador Dali painted one of his most famous works, The Persistence of Memory, a surrealistic image of melting pocket watches.

In 1940, as World War II tore through Europe, Dali and Gala retreated to the United States, where they lived for eight years. Dali worked profusely in a variety of media during this period, designing jewelry, clothes, furniture, stage sets for plays and ballet. In 1948 Dalí and Gala moved back into their house in Cadaqués, Spain. For the next three decades, he would spend most of his time there painting. Salvador Dali died on January 23, 1989.
