Art. Bau-Xi Gallery in both Vancouver and Toronto are pleased to present Al Fresco, a new series of floral paintings by Canadian artist Jamie Evrard.
In this latest body of work, Jamie Evrard finds inspiration in the various hanging gardens she encounters in her travels through Italy. Observed during morning walks the artist takes around her home in Tuscany and neighboring villas, she utilizes the unique shapes of cascading wisteria and the sculptural shape of wild roses as a basis to begin painting.
“In these pieces, I am relying less and less on photographs and actual plant material and more on my imagination. In the summer, when the days are long and the light is bright, painting feels like a dance and I hope these works will convey some of the pleasure I had in making them.”
Al Fresco is a continuation of Evrard’s play with abstract brushwork, mark-making and a new expressive energy in representing her floral subjects. The memory of their scent, shape and line or what the artist calls “their calligraphy” comes to life in her pieces, expressing a movement and energy beyond the surface of the canvas.
