Hell on Wheels season 4 rocks! Everything, every single detail is absolutely interesting. Of course, Hell on Wheels shows fictional characters and facts but also, historical people and realities.
Yareah magazine has already spoken about Mr. Durant, Governor Campbell, Eva, Brigham Young… All of them with a real correspondence in history. However, one of the most thrilling characters in Hell on Wheels is Thor “The Swede” Gundersen (actor Christopher Heyerdahl).
Thor “The Swede” Gundersen was born in Norway, in spite of his nickname. Then, we have been interested in the relation between The Union Pacific Railroad and Norwegian people.
Did you know that there is a village in Benton County, Iowa, United States, called Norway? The population was 545 at the 2010 census, but it has a very interesting origin.
Maybe you also like this post: Hell on Wheels. The real story of Mr Durant, Cullen Bohannon alter ego.
Norway in Benton County was founded in 1863 by Osman Tuttle (a European man, who was born in Hjelmeland, Norway) two years after the Chicago and Northwestern Railway had reached this part of the county.
Tuttle donated five acres of ground to the railway company with the condition that the new town will bear the name of his native country.
Today, the Union Pacific Railroad runs on the edge of Norway.
The true name of Tuttle was Osmund Endreson Totland, an entrepreneur who dreamt of his faraway country like Thor “The Swede” Gundersen does. However and for sure, he would not be as crazy as our fictional character, a psychopath who changes his personality from season to season. In Hell on Wheels season 4, he believes he is a Mormon man. Anyway, he keeps on looking for revenge against Cullen Bohannon (actor Anson Mount).
If you know more about Osmund Endreson Totland, tell us please. It’s an amazing story! Most Norwegians who came to America worked on farms and construction, also in the railroad. The Swede was no exception.
Enjoy your day, Yareah friends. Art is everywhere and up to you! Hell on Wheels season 4 rocks!
