New York events. Celebrate Mexico Now!

New York events. Now in its second decade, Celebrate Mexico Now! Organized by CN Management- brings together the performers and creators, the makers and chroniclers to show how vibrant and thrilling the country’s arts scene is. From October 28 to November 1, 2014, Mexico’s many regional and cultural identities will shine at events around the city that stimulate all the senses.

“As a festival, we focus on iconic sounds, sights, and tastes,” explains Festival Director Claudia Norman, “while highlighting how fluid these roots are, and how tuned in to international conversations and scenes Mexican artists are.”

Sometimes humble forms gain international acclaim and are then elevated to high art. Such is the tale of the taco, as told in La Tacopedia (NYU’s King Juan Carlos of Spain Center, October 28), a new work of social history and culinary savor by writer and visual artist Alejandro Escalante. Festival goers will get a chance to savor this history–as well as other culinary pleasures from Mexico’s varied cuisine–thanks to Taste of Mexico Now, a special initiative uniting Mexican chefs around New York. Taco aficionados can download a map to taco bliss at the festival website, which will lead them to festival-themed specials at Bar Bruno, Café Frida, Hecho en Dumbo, La Palapa, El Mitote, Papatzul, Sembrado en NY, Toloache, Tacuba, Los Tacos No. 1 and Taquería Nixtamalito.

This year’s edition showcases Mexican musicians’ current fascination with the wealth of 20th century orchestral works and pop songwriting, by the composers who often drew heavily on traditional musical forms. Pianist Cesar Reyes had dedicated years to finding and performing long-lost piano arrangements of Latin American composers. He presents an evening of favorites at Del Salón al Danzón! (Greenwich House Music School, October 29).

For the festival’s grand finale Day of the Dead (November 1) concert at Town Hall, Alondra de la Parra and the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas will return to the festival that gave the dynamic young conductor her start. The program will pay tribute to Mexican composers unknown to U.S. audiences, including songwriting legend Agustín Lara, with help from Latin pop darling Natalia Lafourcade.

A retrospective that pays tribute to a Mexican artist of a very different kind, Ximena Perez Grobet, will open October 30 at Instituto Cervantes. Grobet’s artist booksthe distillation of her interventions and installations in book formengage viewers with the nuances of book as object, in ways both playful and thought provoking.

In an ongoing tradition, the festival will present winning shorts from the Morelia International Film Festival (School of Visual Arts, October 31), including a documentary about rural Atoyac women in Guerrero State coping with the loss of their husbands and sons to the suppression of revolutionary Lucio Cabañas’ guerillas in the 1970s. (Director Anaïs Pareto Onghena will be available at the screening for a Q&A)

As the cricket season draws to a close, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) can report a surge in popularity for guests seeking a full day of luxury hospitality at Lord’s during a Test Match in 2016. In the Home of Cricket’s most iconic venues – the Captains’ Lounge and Marylebone Suite – hospitality packages which included a hearty breakfast, sumptuous four-course lunch and luxury afternoon tea, sold out quickly for the first three days of the England v Sri Lanka and England v Pakistan Investec Test Matches. Private Boxes with the best views of the action for up to 18 guests also sold out fast for the same days. MCC revealed a sharp increase in revenue for its 2016 Sri Lanka Test Match hospitality packages compared with 2014 when the team last played England at Lord’s. Revenues for hospitality were up by nearly 30% over the same period in 2014 whilst private box sale revenues were up by a healthy 60%. Nick Kenton, MCC Head of Sales, Meetings & Events and Hospitality, said: “2016 has been a fantastic year for enjoying a day of cricket whilst experiencing the very best food, drink and hospitality that Lord’s has to offer. “This year’s sales figures show that hospitality packages at Lord’s were in huge demand and continue to be a key part of the summer sporting calendar.” Lord’s also expects high demand for its new hospitality packages, to be released this autumn for 2017 matches. These include England v South Africa from 6th to 10th July and England v West Indies from 7th to 11th September. Packages for the England v Ireland Royal London One-Day International on 7th May 2017 are also expected to sell out in record time. Details of all hospitality options at Lord’s can be found on its website
