The Hunger Games. Mockingjay symbol

At the beginning of The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen (actress Jennifer Lawrence) was given a mockingjay pin by Madge Undersee, the daughter of District 12’s mayor.

A mockingjay is a mysterious bird, the result of the genetically created Capitol jabberjays mating with female mockingbirds.

Jabberjays had the ability to memorize and repeat entire human conversations, and were used as spies, because they gather words and information from the rebels. However, the funny thing was that the people in the districts used the jabberjays to feed lies to the Capitol. once they realized how their private conversations were being transmitted. Thus, the Capitol abandoned them to die off in the wild.

Mockingjays were able to repeat both human melodies and birdsong, although mockingjays lost the jabberjay’s ability to enunciate words.

Katniss Everdeen’s pin was thought to be a weapon by the 74th Hunger Games Makers, but it was accepted and she wears the pin as her token in the Games.

Her friend Rue, District 11 tribute, has special mockingjay friends, because this district is known to have an especially large mockingjay population. Rue and Katniss could communicate thanks to mockingjays.

By Catching Fire mockingjays become a symbol of rebellion.

In Mockingjay, Katniss Everdeen becomes the titular character, a person who speaks to the districts for the rebels, and she wears a mockingjay-inspired costume and the pin.

These birds could be compared to the Quetzal, the symbol of freedom in Central America.
