Cheyenne is the capital and most populous city of the US state of Wyoming and the county seat of Laramie County.

On July 5, 1867, General Grenville M. Dodge and his survey crew made a map of the place known as Cheyenne, in Dakota Territory (now, Wyoming Territory). This site was chosen as the point at which the Union Pacific Railroad crossed Crow Creek (Hell on Wheels season 4), a tributary of the South Platte River.

Cheyenne was named for the American Indian Cheyenne nation, one of the most prominent Great Plains tribes.

The construction of the Union Pacific Railroad directed by Thomas ‘Doc’ Durant (actor Colm Meaney in Hell on Wheels TV show) brought great prosperity to the region, when on November 13 1867, they reached Cheyenne. The population at the time numbered over 4,000 and grew quickly.

They were part of this population of railroad workers, prostitutes, men seeking fortune, gamblers, and outlaws: Cullen Bohannon (actor Anson Mount), Elam Ferguson (Common), Eva (Robin McLeavy), Mickey McGinnes (Phil Burke), Ruth (Kasha Kropinski)… Or people very similar to them.

Cheyenne, like most of the rest of Wyoming, is semi-arid. Winters are cold and moderately long, but relatively dry, with a December average of 28.8 °F (−1.8 °C). However, the cold is often interrupted, with chinook winds blowing downslope from the Rockies that can bring warm conditions. Spring and autumn are quick transitions, and summers are warm.

John Allen Campbell (October 8, 1835 – July 14, 1880) was the first governor of the Wyoming territory. In Hell on Wheels season 4, zctor Jake Weber plays the role as Governor Campbell.

John Allen Campbell approved the first law in United States history explicitly granting women the right to vote.

The Wyoming State Capitol was constructed between 1886 and 1890, with further improvements being completed in 1917.
