Vancouver art. Bau-Xi Gallery is pleased to present Poetics of Persona, a new series of portraits, by Canadian painter Stuart Slind. AUG 16 – 30, 2014. Opening Reception: Saturday, August 16th 2 – 4pm. ARTIST IN ATTENDANCE.
Stuart Slind’s latest body of work is a collection of people he encountered over the past year. Each possesses a underlying emotion that is detectable, but not necessarily defined by their physiology. Through contemplation of these subjects, Slind distills a pure and spiritual element to their essential being, one that emits behind the physical attributes. His reaction is sympathetic as he comes to the realization that the emotion displayed on the canvas is one present at the forefront of his own subconscious.
Poetics of Persona is a significant departure from Slind’s meditations on landscapes and still life objects, as he is forced to react to the changing appearance of an animate subject. Invoking his classical still life approach to portraiture, this series becomes at once personal and symbolic. The paintings capture the artist’s inference of the subject’s persona based on their appearance alone. It is the relationship between the soul of the sitter and the artist’s intense study of it that radiates off the canvas and into the space of the viewer.
