In the quest to find her place in the world, artist Ana Mendieta (1948-1985) merged with the landscape in some photographs, which camouflaged her naked body with the environment. She challenged beauty ideals with her self-portraits with beard, and protested against women abuse in other works, where she was covered with blood in mixture of pagan ritual… “Through my art I express the immediacy of life and eternity of nature,” she wrote in 1981, four years before her death at 36, in tragic circumstances.

Ana Mendieta died on September 8, 1985 in New York from a fall from her 34th floor apartment in Greenwich Village’s 300 Mercer Street, where she lived with her husband, sculptor Carl Andre. Before, neighbors had heard the couple arguing violently. There were no eyewitnesses and Andre lawyer described Mendieta death as a possible accident or suicide.

Now, a retrospective in Austria (Museum der Moderne in Salzburg) has deployed for the first time in a German-speaking country, the creative language of this Cuban artist.

Visionary artist Ana Mendieta has left us a tragic and magical art, maybe as her own life.

Enjoy your day, Yareah friends. Art is everywhere and up to you!
