Fletcher Benton: Folded Square Alphabets, Numericals and Stainless Steel Donuts

DALLAS, TX – Samuel Lynne Galleries is pleased to represent world-renowned American sculptor Fletcher Benton and his painted steel sculptures from the Folded Square Alphabets, Numericals and Donut series. Best known for working in the Constructivist and Kinetic art traditions, Benton creates geometrical forms that both enlighten and command the immediate attention of the observer. These vibrant sculptures exemplify Benton’s use of negative space and alter the viewer’s ¬perspective into a new shape of it’s own.

An Ohio native who has lived in San Francisco since 1956, Fletcher Benton has been a force to be reckoned with since the 1960’s when he became a pioneer in the kinetic sculpture movement, which used mechanics to create visual momentum. Currently, he creates small scale as well as monumental sculptures as part of his Folded Square Alphabets and Numericals series. Benton revisits the bare nature of our language and mathematical systems and discovers inherent rhythms in each letter and number. These familiar forms that we face in our quotidian lives come to life and allow us to watch as lines transcend their original space, defying gravity.

Carter Ratcliff, art critic and contributing editor to Art in America and Art on Paper has written on Benton: “Building reminiscences of collapse and chaos into his sculptures, Benton helps us see what it is to create formal order; from physical contingency, he builds aesthetic necessity. What keeps Benton’s sculptures alive is his disinclination to let necessity look ponderous. Thus he teases nothing inevitable about sculptural necessity. It must be won from the forces of mundane disorder, and once the victory is achieved, it must be achieved again.”

Fletcher Benton received his B.F.A. from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and has taught at the California College of Arts and Crafts, the San Francisco Art Institute as well as California State University in San Jose. His accolades include the Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York; President’s Scholar Award, California State University, San Jose; Award for Outstanding Achievement in Sculpture, San Francisco Arts Commission, California; Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts, Miami University, Oxford, OH; Ohioana Career Award, Ohioana Library Association, Columbus, OH; Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts, University of Rio Grande, OH; and the 2008 Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award from the International Sculpture Center. Benton’s work is in public collections at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, California Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany; The Brooklyn Museum; and The Oakland Museum of California, among others.
