56 artists who were members of the noted women’s cooperative Artemisia Gallery will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the gallery with a exhibition of their current work Friday, May 2nd6-10PM in the Bridgeport Art Center’s (1200 W. 35thSt.) 4th floor gallery. Join us to celebrate the legacy of this influential and groundbreaking women’s art cooperative.

In September 1973, 20 female Chicago artists formed Artemisia Gallery, dedicated to show work of women artists. From 1973 until closing in 2003, Artemisia played an essential role in supporting and nurturing the careers of over 150 women artists, their mentees and exhibiting guest artists, many of whom made their mark on the Chicago art scene and beyond. The gallery was named after well known 17th century Italian painter, Artemisia Gentileschi.
