Sotheby’s New York Prints Sale Led By Important Collections – 1 & 2 May 2014.
Sotheby’s 1 & 2 May Prints auction will include a stunning group of six C.R.W. Nevinson drypoints from his iconic New York series of the early 1920s, formerly from the estate of Catherine Gamble Curran. Leading the group and appearing at auction for the first time ever is Nevinson’s New York – An Abstraction(est. $30/50,000). The sale also includes an experimental proof of Claes Oldenburg’s Profile Airflow (Axsom & Platzker 59) from The Museum of Modern Art (est. $80/120,000). A collection of unusual Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec lithographs includes several proofs that precede his finished compositions, most notably Moulin Rouge, La Goulue (D. 339; ADR. 1; W. P1) showing only the black keystone, an early and rare impression of the artist’s first print (est. $200/250,000). Sotheby’s specialist Mark Best discusses the history of this work by Toulouse-Lautrec in a blog post on Sothebys.com.
Multiple prints up for auction this May were also featured in Sotheby’s Inaugural Designer Showhouse in March, an innovative approach to highlighting the treasure trove of fine art offered this season at Sotheby’s.
Highlights from the sale will be on view at our York Avenue galleries beginning on 27 April. More information can be found at the sale page here.
Enjoy your day, Yareah friends. Art is everywhere and up to you!
