Australian art. Stephen Nothling ‘s Home Truths, will be opened on Saturday 12th April, 3-5 pm by Australian Actress Marta Dusseldorp.
Artist Statement: “The paintings that form this exhibition portray simple recognition of my immediate surroundings. Through this thematic exploration I hope to convey a sense of humility and modesty rather than pretension. The objects that I have painted, such as wooden toys made by my children’s grandfather, fabric dolls that have been hand stitched by my daughter to resemble her parents and friends, the family Madonna, various ornaments and table decorations, and of course flowers and fruit, all have a particular personal affinity. For me, there is no grandeur inherent in still life; one can only strive to instil a quiet dignity into the tableaux portrayed that has the ability to resonate with others.
As an artist, my desire to convey an authenticity and the only way to achieve this is to reflect upon and delve into oneself. Home Truthsis an exploration of myself through objects and ephemera that have been collected over time. This journey has allowed me to create a rational form of existence as part of a family within the whole kit and caboodle.
I often ask myself: what form of meaning does a rose painting sustain when one can simply venture into a cheap homemaker shop and find a print for a couple of dollars? My suburb recently had a hard rubbish collection, during which I came across a large mass-produced image of a rose that had been disposed of. Its usefulness and value to its owner had clearly surpassed its material presence. Unlike such disposable objects, I can only hope that my paintings hold the perseverance, honesty, and humour that sustain me.
Home Truths is not particularly beautiful or pretty. Nor does it aim to be. It is neither dark nor light in sentiment. The paintings are suburban. Some are a little geometric, tropical and eclectic. They are influenced by popular culture and plumbing. Most importantly, they are entirely autobiographical.” – Stephen Nothling 2014
