New York luxury shopping. Joie de Vivre. A Selling Exhibition at Sotheby’s: NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE: JOIE DE VIVRE. April 2014.

Sotheby’s is pleased to present a selling exhibition of works by Niki de Saint Phalle, Joie de Vivre, featuring over 30 sculptures by the Parisian sculptor, painter and filmmaker, in our S|2 gallery in New York. The show will be a journey through the visionary artist’s career exploring an expansive range of works from her unconventional and masterful oeuvre, with sculptures spanning a wide range of size, date and price range. The exhibition is led by Nana, a museum-quality sculpture representing one of de Saint Phalle’s most important and iconic motifs. This sculpture, made entirely of marble, is a particularly rare piece, as most of these figures were created in painted polyester. Marble Nana’s are most often seen in museums and rarely available privately. Very similar marble Nanas are in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and at The University of Pennsylvania. Reaching nearly six feet tall, the Nana up for private sale at Sotheby’s is one of the largest Nana figures ever created by the artist, and a marble Nana of this magnitude has not been offered on the market in decades.

Works by de Saint Phalle are included in many of the world’s most prestigious museums including Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Tate Modern, London, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC and Moderna Museet, Stockholm, among others. Additionally, many of her large-scale sculptures are also exhibited in public places around the world including the Stravinksy Fountain near the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Hotel Negresco in Nice, France, the Tarot Garden in Tuscany and at the University of California, San Diego as a part of the Stuart Collection of public art. The selling exhibition precedes a major retrospective of de Saint Phalle’s work at the Grand Palais in Paris in October 2014. Joie de Vivre will be on view from 4 – 18 April 2014 at our New York gallery.
