Robin Hood’s Bay. A smuggler’s haven

Discover Robin Hood’s Bay’s smuggling heritage this winter with a three day, two night, stay in the 18th century North Yorkshire fishing village for £300 per person.

Local company Baytown has organised this special tour and guest speakers, local historians and characters will guide visitors around Robin Hood’s Bay and surrounding localities to give a unique insight into the adventures and intrigues of the 18th century. There will also be visits to the hidden smuggling related places of Bay which many locals have not even seen!

Tour price also includes sumptuous food in Bay’s intimate restaurants, a guided tour of Whitby’s smuggling related places and accommodation in the village’s top hotel and guest houses.

Available tour dates are 21 to 23 October 2014, 14 to 16 November 2014 and 13 to 15 March 2015

Visit details include an introductory evening meal with scene setting talk on Robin Hood’s Bay and its heritage. This will be followed with a walk into old Baytown, the 18th century locals’ name for the village, to the pub based folk club or quiz night.

Daytime itinerary includes a guided walk through the byways of Baytown and a personal tour of the ways of the smuggler. For the adventurous, take a guided walk through the village’s Beck tunnel to see various sealed smugglers’ holes.

The tour also visits the entrance site of a smuggler’s tunnel located in one of many cottages. It also includes a tour of Old St Stephen’s church sitting high over Bay to hear of its links with the many seafaring characters of the village. The day ends at Thorpe Hall, home of the local squire for centuries, to hear and see the close links between the Hall and Bay’s smugglers.

The final day’s activities include a guided walk round the narrow streets of Whitby, the ancient fishing port, to hear how it too had a reputation for smuggling.

Following some free time, the tour will visit Raven Hall Hotel in Ravenscar. The Hotel has commanding views of Robin Hood’s Bay and has a history of its owners being linked closely with the smuggling trade.

Tour costs include accommodation, two breakfasts, two three course evening meals, buffet lunch and the two course luncheon. All guides, talks and transportation are also included. Drinks to accompany meals are not included. Prices are based on two people sharing a room.
