Culture in Spain. Today, March 9 2014, thousands of people and hundreds of artists of various disciplines: music, film, theater, dance, circus, visual arts and writing, they have participated in Madrid in the act ‘We are all culture’, demanding the “dignity of the culture.”
The event was organized by the Platform in Defense of Culture, an important association that joints more than 80 cultural collectives. They demand that public urban spaces can be freely used by people and are against their privatization. Also, they demand that arts education will not disappear from schools and ask for the existence of a public TV and radio, which can prime cultural spaces and events, without reliance on political dictates. They consider cultural VAT too high and would like to ensure access to culture for all citizens. In fact, they were rights that Spanish people had achieved but now it seems they are at risk.
The event has been held in the Paseo de Recoletos in Madrid, where families and citizens have been enjoying a variety of activities, including classical, rock and hip hop concerts, magic shows and circus, or artistic and theatrical performances.
Paco Clavel, Kiko Veneno or Miguel Rios have participated in the final act claiming “if we act, we can.”
Definitely, maybe it’s a good moment to remember this sentence:
“Without culture, and the relative freedom it implies, society, even when perfect, is but a jungle. This is why any authentic creation is a gift to the future.” Albert Camus.
An how about this other one by an unforgettable Spanish author?
“Truth may be stretched, but cannot be broken, and always gets above falsehood, as does oil above water.” Miguel de Cervantes.
Enjoy your day, Yareah friends. Art is everywhere and up to you… or at least we try to make it so.
