Mr Durant in Hell on Wheels

Hell on Wheels TV series is based on an epic story. The construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad across the United States. This epic story is starring different characters. Some of them are fictional characters, but others are based on real persons. Days ago we talked about Olive Oatman (Eva Toole in the series). Today, about Mr Durant, the dark Durant, Cullen Bohannon opponent and alter ego.

Thomas Clark Durant was born on February 6 1820 in Lee, Massachusetts.

He studied medicine in Albany and used the honorific “Doctor” throughout his life.

During some years, he worked as a surgeon but he retired and became a director of his uncle grain exporting company in New York. There, he understood the need of improving transportation. Then, he entered in the railroad industry.

Durant and Henry Farnam created a company: Mississippi and Missouri Railroad. M&M was the first which built a wooden bridge to cross the Mississippi river. Curiously, Abraham Lincoln was their attorney.

Old friends, in 1862 President Abraham Lincoln would select Durant new company, the Union Pacific, and its operation center in Council Bluffs as the starting point of the First Transcontinental Railroad.

Durant manipulated the stock market, cheated politicians and government, and made a fortune smuggling contraband cotton from the Confederate States during the Civil War. He was able to get anything for his purposes.

Credit Mobilier was created to build the railroad track, but Durant manipulated its structure so that he could control it. He was discovered and it was the beginning of a great financial scandal.
