Ikon is pleased to be participating in the London-based art fair Art14 with a booth centred on Gillian Wearing’s A Real Birmingham Family.
A Real Birmingham Family is a project from Turner Prize-winning artist Gillian Wearing led by Ikon that has been over three years in the making.
During 2011 and 2012, residents of Birmingham were urged to nominate their families to be the face of Birmingham. No limits were placed on how the 21st century family might define itself and nominations were received from hundreds of participants. In 2013, the Jones family consisting of two sisters Roma and Emma, both single parents, and their two sons Kyan and Shaye, were selected as A Real Birmingham Family. A new city-centre bronze sculpture of the family will be unveiled in Centenary Square outside the new Library of Birmingham in autumn 2014.
At Art14 Ikon will be selling special Gillian Wearing A Real Birmingham Family posters in a limited edition of 100, numbered and signed by the artist for £60.  The poster features a photograph of the Jones family in a similar pose that will be used for the statue.  Ikon will also be screening a video interview with the Jones family at its booth, F12. In addition, a miniature of the A Real Birmingham Family statue will be produced as limited edition, available following the completion of main statue in autumn 2014.
Art14 takes place at Olympia Grand Hall, London, W14 8UX, 28 February – 2 March 2014.
Gillian Wearing now begins the process of making the sculpture. Ikon needs to raise £100,000 to fund A Real Birmingham Family. Donations can be made via Ikon’s website
