A stellar line-up of entrepreneur judges are poised to begin the search for the Santander Breakthrough 50 in partnership with Smarta – an awards scheme recognising some of the UK’s 50 fastest growing and most ambitious businesses.

Smarta founder Shaa Wasmund will join members of the Santander SME advisory Board, which includes Ana Botín, CEO of Santander UK and Paul Lindley, CEO of baby food brand Ella’s Kitchen, on the judging panel tasked with uncovering 50 of the most exceptional and fastest growth businesses in Britain.

The Santander Breakthrough 50 has been created to recognise businesses that have grabbed a significant market share, are boasting growing revenues and have a clear vision to develop even more in the future. The winners will be the leading figures of the entrepreneurial movement in the UK, each with a unique blueprint for success and a story to inspire other entrepreneurs.

Winning companies will become a member of the Breakthrough 50 alumni and attend the awards ceremony with the SME advisory board, fellow Breakthrough 50 winners and other fast growing businesses.

This means each winning business will receive exclusive access to networking events with the UK’s top businesses and other Breakthrough 50 winners. The alumni network will launch at the Breakthrough 50 awards ceremony where businesses will have the opportunity to meet the other winners and the judges who chose them.

The top five businesses chosen by the panel will also be invited to pitch to the judges with one Overall Winner receiving the opportunity to take a place on a once in a lifetime trade mission to Brazil, New York or Mexico and receive mentoring from one of the SME Advisory Board, members of which include Ana Botín and Sir Terry Leahy.

Ahead of the launch of the first ever Santander Breakthrough 50 Awards, Smarta’s Wasmund said: “Growing businesses set the precedent for others to aspire to. We want to recognise the fastest growing businesses that are punching above their weight, making significant impacts on established industries and raising the bar for all other small and medium sized enterprises in the UK.”

“If you’re running or are part of a business that’s grown at an exceptional rate, then we want to hear from you. Apply now and let us tell the world how great you are.”

Ana Botín, CEO of Santander UK, said: “Small and medium-sized companies play a vital role in driving new job creation and economic growth. Furthermore, it is just a small section of these businesses, just 10 percent, which create the majority of these jobs and growth. At Santander, we are committed to supporting these businesses, as we believe they are the ones that have the potential to become the global leaders of the future.

“The Breakthrough 50 awards are a fantastic opportunity to showcase and celebrate the spirit of enterprise, innovation and ambition of our best and fastest growing smaller businesses in the UK and an invaluable opportunity to create a community of peers who can learn from each other.”

The Santander Breakthrough 50 in partnership with Smarta opens for entries on Monday 3rd February. Businesses have until April 30th to apply at

The winning businesses will be announced May 15th.
