Swans are elegant and were brought from Europe more than a century ago, but are doomed now. The state of New York has decided to kill 2,200 swans before 2025. They are considered a dangerous invasive species to native birds and even to people. The New York Times gave the testimony of a couple and their son, who had to defend themselves with their oars of a crazy swan when they were in a canoe near Long Island.
Furthermore, they destroy the habitat of local ducks and geese, attack other birds, and put the aircraft flying passengers at risk.
Poor swans! Who would say they are so dangerous. Lots of poets and artists have been inspired by them! Old times!
“Now, if you notice how the swan, putting its neck down into the deep water, brings up food for itself from below, then you will discover the wisdom of the Creator, in that He gave it a neck longer than its feet for this reason, that it might, as if lowering a sort of fishing line, procure the food hidden in the deep water.” Saint Basil.
