Hong Kong Fashion Designer Erbert Chong. Launches Autumn Winter 2014 Collection at the Iconic Sun Beam Theatre. Reinterprets Old Glamour and Dark Occultism with a Gracefully Edgy Fashion Line.
(Hong Kong, 14 January 2014) Hong Kong designer Erbert Chong presented his Autumn Winter 2014 Collection on 8th January at the iconic Sunbeam Theatre. The launch, featuring the new 1910’s and 1920’s inspired collection, was a night of old world glamour with a dark twist.
“Fritz Lang’s 1927 Art Deco film Metropolis was a key source of inspiration. I wanted to emulate the futuristic dystopia setting, dazzling cityscapes and hypnotic mythical imageries to set the dark undertone of this collection. I also combined elements from Art Deco architectural masterpieces like the Chrysler Building in New York City, to create modern silhouettes with strong geometrical lines.” Erbert Chong commented on the new collection.
Heavily influenced by his Hong Kong heritage, Erbert often plays with the dichotomy of the old and new, with an aim to create a gracefully-edgy new look of Asia that focuses on re-inventing the local legacy with a universal aesthetic. The pieces of this collection have Chinese heritage influenced details and silhouettes drawn from the traditional qipao, with fabrics sourced from Paris and Beijing’s oldest, historic fabric shop, Rui Fu Xiang.
The designer said, “Established in 1862, it is still the prime choice to shop for premium quality handcrafted silk Chinese fabric for traditional cheongsam and qipao. I used the Chinese print fabric to give texture and accentuate the silhouette and the details. The fusing of the traditional and the modern allows the collection to ooze the same allure of the strange and mystical séance.”
Before graduating from ESMOD, the world’s oldest fashion school, Erbert had already created artwork for Stierblut GmbH – a high-end fashion store in Munich, designed a capsule jewellery collection for exhibition at Beijing’s Prince Kung’s Mansion, and scouted top fashion talents for labels under the LVMH group. In 2013 he made his entry into the Hong Kong fashion scene with the launch of his debut collection “Safari54”. Erbert wants his designs to inspire women to embrace their natural body-shape.
The HKTDC Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter will feature Erbert’s design at its World Boutique to showcase his collections at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 13th to 16th January 2014.
